Common questions

What NI do self-employed people pay in 2026/27?

Class 4 at 6% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above. Class 2 is no longer compulsory; you can pay it voluntarily to protect State Pension entitlement if profits are below £7,105.

What are payments on account?

Advance payments towards next year’s bill, each half of this year’s tax and Class 4 NI, due 31 January and 31 July. They apply when your bill is over £1,000 and less than 80% is collected at source.

When does Making Tax Digital start for me?

From April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000, April 2027 over £30,000, and April 2028 over £20,000.
